Position Description


The Lead Clinician serves as a primary health care provider to American University students, within the scope of practice of a Nurse Practitioner according to the DC Board of Nursing or a Physician Assistant according to the DC Board of Health. The Lead Clinician serves as a resource to SHC on best patient care practices and administratively supervises 3 Advanced Practice Clinicians (APC), 1 Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner (PNP), and 2 registered nurses (RN), and a medical assistant.

Supervisory Responsibility

Provides Administrative supervision for 3 APCs, 1 Psychiatric NP and 2 RNs. Percentage of administrative/supervisory time varies with season. During peak volume time, supervisory time will be 30% of work hours. During slower times of the year (eg. Summer, mid-December to mid-January), supervisory time will increase to 50% of work hours.

Essential Functions

1. Provide primary health care services within scope of practice of the Student Health Center ensuring that care is appropriate to the age, culture, and individual needs of the patient.

2. Obtain health histories and perform physical exams. Diagnose and manage acute and chronic health conditions in partnership with the patient. Order, conduct, and interpret diagnostic studies and lab tests. Perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Prescribe and recommend pharmacological and non-pharmacological therapies, including controlled medications, in accordance with applicable laws.

3. Follow standard charting procedures as determined by clinic policy; participate in chart and peer review. Assure adequate follow-up.

4. Communicate with patients via telephone regarding lab results, advice, follow-up instructions, and referrals. Provide precise information to enable the patient to make informed decisions regarding health care and related issues.

5. Plan appropriate care utilizing campus and off-campus resources and relays information as necessary and appropriate for continuity of care. Promote positive patient relations and treat others with care and respect, maintaining confidentiality, privacy and dignity.

6. The Lead APC functions as part of the Student Health Center leadership team, providing ongoing feedback to SHC leadership team of issues that the APCs, RNs and Psychiatric NP may be experiencing. The Lead APC also functions as a resource to the APCs, Psychiatric NP and RNs.

7. Administrative and supervisory responsibilities include: managing clinical schedules for APCs, the PNP and the RNs, efficient problem solving of supervisees’ administrative issues; providing ongoing feedback, mid-year evaluations and performance evaluations for the supervisees; and assisting and organizing orientation for new clinical employees.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

  • 40 hours/week.
  • Non-Exempt
  • The position can be either an 11, or 12-month position
  • During the academic year, one early evening shift (to 8pm) will be expected every other week

Salary Range

Commensurate with experience.

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree
  • 2-4 years of relevant experience


Preferred Education and Experience

  • Master's degree
  • 2-4 years of relevant experience
  • Experience supervising health providers
  • At least 1 year (post graduate) experience in Primary Care Medicine as an Advanced Practice Clinician

Additional Eligibility Qualifications

  • Current NP licensure or PA licensure in the District of Columbia
  • National Certification as a Family or adult NP or PA
  • At least 2 years of clinical experience as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant in a primary care setting
  • Requires strong interpersonal skills and the ability to discuss medical information with patients in an understandable manner with a high degree of tact
  • Ability to coach and mentor nurses and other APCs is important
  • Hiring offers for this position are contingent on the successful completion of a background check
