Position Description

The Surgical Advanced Practice Provider demonstrates knowledge, expertise and clinical competency in managing surgical patient populations. This role may also include First and Second Surgical Assist. The Surgical Advanced Practice Provider exercises independent judgement in the assessment, diagnosis and initiation of medical processes and procedures, in accordance with the licensure regulations of the Commonwealth of Virginia, and as delineated in the written Scope of Practice and Protocol. Demonstrates respect for and an understanding of other clinical disciplines while using an integrated team-based approach to achieve desired patient outcomes. Participates in quality and best practice initiatives by utilizing standards and guidelines for cost effective care delivery to continuously improve patient care and enhance outcomes. Performs high-quality clinical practices and effective patient management under physician supervision by following state regulations, including primary and secondary specialty care in clinical and/or surgical practice settings.

Job Responsibilities

 

  • Under the direction of the attending physician, performs preoperative patient assessment, provides safe therapeutic care in a holistic and systematic way and incorporates differences into the provision of care, integrates knowledge, skills and experiences to meet the needs of patients and families throughout the continuum to include patient family education, and reviews and evaluates patient charts and required labs, X-rays and ECG while discussing patient results with the attending physician, anesthesiologist and/or appropriate clinician
  • Collaborates with surgical team to determine positioning techniques, instrumentation requirements, and patients' needs and confers with attending physician. Advocates patient rights from the patient/family perspective: provides counsel and acts as a resource to resolve issues. Provides continuing patient and family medical education
  • Performs rounds on patients to assess their post operative progress and delivers surgical care as appropriate
  • Evaluates and documents patients' response to care, and evaluates impact of illness on patients' health status, functional status, nutritional status, sleep and rest patterns, family and social relationships, and establishes a health promotion strategy
  • Provides accurate record keeping as evidenced by complete and pertinent history/physicals, pre-operative/progress notes, discharge summaries and data information sheets
  • Practices in accordance with safe and effective standards of care and ensures compliance with professional and ethical standards of practice
  • Communicates appropriately with physicians, peers, nursing staff and other healthcare providers
  • Serves as a role model and preceptor for new Advanced Practice Providers and students
  • Participates in and supports the departmental, hospital, and system-wide quality performance improvement initiatives
  • Supports departmental cost savings strategies and provides care in an efficient and cost conscious manner
  • Assists in the development and revision of standards for patient populations and integrates evidence-based research findings into clinical practice
  • Participates in clinical research and data collection and assists in projects and planning for continual development of respective specialty
  • Provides clinical and professional educational programs to improve staff knowledge
  • Follows OSHA and safety precautions by handling instruments properly, using standard precautions, utilizing a safety zone and wearing appropriate PPE
  • May perform additional duties as assigned



Additional Requirements

Certification - Basic Life Support upon start; Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (for Critical Care) upon start; Pediatric Advanced Life Support (for Pediatrics) upon start

Licensure - Registered Nurse Compact License (depending on State of primary residence) and a license (or eligibility for) as a nurse practitioner or physician assistant in the Commonwealth of Virginia AND a "Practice Agreement" signed by sponsoring/supervising physician(s), AND a written "Scope of Practice/Protocol" signed by the supervising physician, AND "Drug Enforcement Administration License" (if prescribing controlled substances); Licensed Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner Experience - No prior experience required; New graduate considered

Education - For Nurse Practitioners: Bachelor's Degree in Nursing and Master's Degree in Advanced Clinical Practice or graduate of a post-masters certificate program for nurse practitioners, OR a certificate from an education program that is accredited by the Council of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs/Schools, American College of Nurse Midwives, American Association of Colleges of Nursing of the National League for Nursing; For Physician Assistants: Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program and certification by National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants
