ADVANCED PRACTICE REGISTERED NURSES (APRNs) AUTHORITY TO SIGN FORMS THAT REQUIRE A PHYSICIAN’S SIGNATURE

This statement is issued to clarify that, in the District of Columbia, the Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) Signature Authority Amendment Act of 2017 (effective February 17, 2018) authorizes advanced practice registered nurses to sign all documents that a physician is required to sign, in place of said physician. Published in DC Register on March 16, 2018.

Specifically, authority for this action is predicated in the amendment to DC Official Code § 3‐1206.04(5) which states:

An advanced practice registered nurse may:

(5) Sign, certify, stamp, or endorse all documents that require a signature by a physician, in place of a physician, provided it is within the scope of their authorized practice.
